鷺舞(島根県)
鷺舞(島根県)
Sagi-mai, or the heron dance, of Tsuwano is designated as an intangible cultural asset by the Japanese Government. It was originally performed at the Gion Festival in Kyoto, and was brought to Tsuwano in 1542. In the past, people believed that this ritual could protect them from infection. This tradition is no longer practiced in Kyoto, so today we can watch Sagi-mai only in Tsuwano. People in Tsuwano are proud to hand down this tradition to the next generation, and continue to perform the heron dance.
