In 774, a boy was born in Sanuki, an old name for Kagawa.  His name was Mao.  Later, he became a great priest and was called Kobo Daishi.  He was very smart and studied very hard as a priest.  One day, he was meditating in a cave.  He could only see the sky and the sea from the cave.  Suddenly, a star flew into his mouth and he was spiritually awakened.  After that, he named himself ‘‘Kukai.’’  ‘‘Ku’’ means ‘‘sky’’ and ‘‘kai’’ means ‘‘sea.’’
