Ranald MacDonald was born in North America in 1824.  When he was young, he grew a desire to go to Japan, a mysterious country.  Japan was closed to any foreign countries except China and Holland.

    In 1845, he became a sailor on a whaling ship.  When the ship came close to Hokkaido, he left it and landed on Yagishiri Islands and then the Rishiri Islands.  He was caught by the Edo shogunate and sent to Nagasaki.  He became the first English teacher in Japan there.  He taught English to 14 Dutch interpreters.  One of his students, Moriyama Einosuke, became the main interpreter for the Japanese government.

　1845年、彼は捕鯨船（ほげいせん）の船員になりました。その船が北海道付近にさしかかった際、船をはなれ焼尻島（やぎしりとう）にわたり、その後、利尻島（りしりとう）にも上陸しました。彼は江戸幕府（えどばくふ）によってとらえられ長崎に移送されました。ラナルドはそこで日本で初めての英語教師となったのです。オランダ語の通訳者14人に英語を教えました。彼の生徒の一人だった森山栄之助は日本政府の主要な通訳者となりました。
